Smith's Master Index of Maritime Museum Websites

Robert H. Smith, of San Diego, is a longtime supporter of marine and maritime philanthropies and the author of two popular cruising guides to harbors, anchorages, and marinas in Northern and Southern California.

Formerly, he was assistant to the chancellor of the University of California, San Diego (the home of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography) and vice-president of development at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, both in La Jolla, CA. In retirement, he has written the most complete guides to all (almost 648) the maritime museums in North America.

The most asked question I receive is: “What is the best maritime museum?” And my answer is always: “Every maritime, lighthouse, canal, or canal lock museum is important as each has its own story — its own reason for having been founded.
