SABRE 38

SABRE 38 Sloop
The Sabre 38 is a fine example of a contemporary cruising sail boat. It has evolved well. it is very difficult to develop a cruising sailboat and keep the vessel looking trim and fine. Space is always a primary concern and in the process of obtaining space, much of the vessels beauty is lost. This boat is 38' 8" on deck with a 12' 4" beam.

U.S.C.G. barque EAGLE

The EAGLE is AMERICAS square rigger.
She is a reminder of our sea going past- The EAGLE as represented today was originally the German vessel "Horst Wessel". She had five sister ships and was built in 1936. The EAGLE is 295' long the beam is 39.37' and she carries 22000 sq. feet of sail. Though she is a square rigger she is a very modern sailing ship at the peak of sailing technology. Each cadet that passes through the academy serves on the EAGLE. The EAGLE is very special, it is our tall ship. The EAGLE was commissioned by the USCG Academy for permanent placement in Chase Hall.

ROUSE SIMMONS

Lumber Schooner ROUSE SIMMONS
The Rouse Simmons was affectionately known as the Christmas Tree Schooner. She was built in 1868. There is not a lot known about the vessel. She was one of a number of schooners that were employed on the Great Lakes to carry stone and lumber from the north woods to the ports in the mid west. The Rose Simmons was in the twilight of her career when she went down off Three Rivers, Wisconsin with a load of Christmas trees bound for Chicago on Christmas Eve. All hands were lost.

Schooner AMERICA

Schooner AMERICA
The Low Black schooner. She was 95' on deck with a beam of 23' and displaced 180 tons. The AMERICA was built at Browns shipyard on the east river in New York City. It is thought that she was designed by George Steers in 1851. AMERICA was born as a result of the industrial revolution. Without it there would not have been any reason to have built her much less sailed across the Alantic and race against the fleet of the Royal Yacht Squadron. This was the beginning of the Americas Cup the most prestigious race in yachting.

Christian Radich

Ship CHRISTIAN RADICH
The CHRISTIAN RADICH is a full rigged ship. She weighs 696 gross tons and her overall length is 242' with a beam of 33'. She is perhaps the best known tall ship in the world. She was built in Norway in 1937 for the Kristiania Schoolship Association to train sailors for the Merchant Marine. She was seized during the 2nd world war by the Germans and made a depot ship.

Oriole

"Queen of the Fleet "
One of the fastest and most beautiful vessels out of Gloucester. She lived from 1908 until 1916 when she was rammed and sunk by a steamer. The Oriole was built in 1908 by Tarr and James at Essex MA. she was designed by Tom McManus of Boston. She was fast and able with a tremendous sail area. She was of the round bow, semi-knockabout type. There was something special about her and that was why the fishermen called her the beautiful ORIOLE.

Friendship Sloop

FRIENDSHIP SLOOP
The Friendship Sloop is a ring boat. It is an evolution of the small fishing boat that produced the Friendship. They were. primarily used for fishing in the protected waters of the Northeast coast. There is some controversy as to who built the first one. It could have been Wilber Morse of Friendship Maine. Whomever it was, they built a pretty boat. They were about 25' long and had a low rig with bowsprits that seemed to go on forever.

Sabre Trawler

Sabreline 36
The Sabreline 36 trawler is manufactured by the Sabre Corporation in South Casco, ME. and is 36' on deck with a beam of 12'6'". The trawler is a work boat that has been the primary type of vessel employed in the fishing industry. By the very nature of her work, has good sea keeping ability and has a lot of below deck room. These are some of the needs of a cruising boat and were incorporated into the present day trawler yacht. The trawler has become very popular as a recreational boat.

Beetle Whale Boat

Beetle Whaleboat
This was a boat that was carried on a whale ship to hunt the whales. These boats were built by the hundreds and one of the favored was the Beetle whaleboat It was 28'11" long and had a beam of 6'7". It was developed by Charles Beetle. They were good for about one voyage and cost about $50.00 in 1850. It was a fine sea boat, not only well adapted to its function but also handsome.

Clitonia

Fishing Schooner CLITONIA
The schooner CLITONIA was built in 1907 in Gloucester, MA. She was designed by John McManus and built by John Bishop. Her length was 121', beam was 24' and drew 12'8" of water. She was named for a yellow bell shaped flower that blooms in the forests in New England in June. It was said that she always led the fleet home. The American fishing schooners have now gone out of existence except for one or two preserved as museum exhibits. During the last sixty years of their evolution, they were admired for their sailing qualities, sea worthiness and beauty.
